Only one micro actuator made by plastic gear and patented technology

Supporting our product development is a plastic gear co-developed with Iwate University and a unique Micro Actuator that incorporates a structural patent technology called the “mysterious gear system.” We are developing future valuable products and technologies with this core technology that has achieved miniaturization, weight reduction, high accuracy, and low price.

What is a microactuator?

A microactuator consists of a motor, which serves as the drive source, and a gear reducer, which increases the output of the motor. A speed reducer is a device that raises the rotation speed of the motor by slowing down the rotation speed of the output shaft with a plurality of gears, thereby increasing the power of the motor. The features are that the gears are made of plastic and that they use the “wonder gear system”. These two features support our company’s core technology.

Advantages of plastic wonder gear reducers

1 plastic gear

Normally, gears for reduction gears are made of metal, but we insisted on using plastic gears because they are smaller and lighter than metal gears. Iwate University, with which we are collaborating in industry-university cooperation, is home to Japan’s first graduate school of mold and casting engineering and a mold technology research center, and is putting its efforts into mold research. Utilizing these technologies, the university has developed ultra-compact, high-precision plastic gears with a module size of less than 0.1, exceeding the limits of metal gears.

2 wonder gear system

The wonder gear system is a gearing system consisting of a sun gear that rotates as one piece with the motor’s output shaft, a planetary gear that revolves around it like a planet, and two internal gears that mesh with the planetary gear. It consists of two internal gears with different number of teeth stacked on top of each other, with the lower internal gears fixed in place and the upper internal gears rotating, and the difference in the number of teeth in the gears amplifies the reduction ratio. The difference in the number of teeth in the gears amplifies the reduction ratio.

Features of plastic wonder gear reducers

1 Miniaturization

Using Iwate University’s precision mold technology, we have made a breakthrough in the limits of miniaturizing gears through plastic molding. We have developed an ultra-compact and lightweight gear that is less than 10 mm in diameter and consists of gears with a single tooth size of approximately 0.1 mm, which is not possible with metal gears.

2 Low price

Since the wonder gear system can reduce gear speed to about 1/100th of a step in a single step, it requires fewer parts than the conventional multistage gear system (three steps are required to reduce speed to about 1/100th of a step), making it smaller, more accurate, and less expensive.

3 High accuracy

Since plastic gears are dependent on the precision of the die, not only is the precision of the part stable, but also the gears mesh in a single step, which reduces the “play” in the moving part of the machine called the backlash and enables high precision.

4 Power conservation

The wonder gear reducer has a self-locking function that prevents rotation from the output shaft side. Even if the motor is off and external forces such as vibration or impact are applied, it continues to hold its position accurately, making it possible to reduce power consumption.

5 Environmental resistance

Unlike metal gears, plastic gears form a solid lubricating film, which gives them excellent friction resistance without the use of oil or grease or other oil lubricants. Since they emit less dust, they can be used in class 100 level clean rooms.

Application examples of micro actuators

1 Fluid control equipment

This product is used in fluid control equipment such as syringes, pumps, and valves that require precise control of fluids. The self-locking function of the wonder gear system allows the valve to maintain a constant opening and closing volume even when electricity is turned off, enabling precise fluid control with low power consumption. (Patent pending)

The Pipetty pen-shaped electric pipette and the Tofutty cordless electric dispenser are products that apply this function. Both products achieve high-precision liquid dispensing, while being compact and lightweight for ease of use.

2 Medical and biological equipment

This is used for micropipettes in analytical instruments. Using our micro actuators, pipettes can be arranged in series at a standard pitch of 9mm and each pipette can be controlled independently, which makes it possible to use it as a multiple independent dispenser for inhaling and discharging small amounts of chemicals with precision.

It is used in medical and animal precision dispensing systems. Micro syringe, pump, and valve based on our micro actuators make it possible to precisely and compactly dispense chemicals.

3 Various optical instruments

This technology is used in the autofocus mechanism of single-lens reflex camera lenses. This is a full-time manual technology that allows switching between auto and manual focus without a switch. (Patented)

Used in the shutter and aperture functions of surveying instruments. It is characterized by precise light intensity adjustment and high-speed shuttering.
